 In the 2018-2019 school year, Garden Gate Montessori School in Walnut Creek will have a 5 morning, Teacher Assistant position in our authentic, beautiful, peaceful, and homey Montessori school in a lush garden setting. We serve twenty students, with one lead teacher/guide and two assistants, and work as a closely collaborative team. We invite you to preview our special little school at 


 PROFESSIONAL ORIENTATION: We seek a mature and child-experienced person with a desire for a long term relationship in a part time position, and residing within a twenty minute commute from our school. The successful Assistant candidate will possess or be enthusiastic about acquiring an understanding of and commitment to genuine Montessori philosophy and practice. See also “responsibilities” below. These embody our most important criteria. 

EARLY CHILDHOOD TRAINING AND BACKGROUND: Preference is given to candidates with at least 50 hours experience in a childcare setting completed within a 6 month period, and at least 6 units of ECE. Ongoing completion will be required for obtaining of of the full 12 units required by state licensing for a “fully qualified” teacher who is legally able to be alone with children. We also require completion within six months of a pediatric CPR course certified by EMSA or American Red Cross. 

ELIGIBILITY TO WORK: Candidates must have legal eligibility to work in the United States. We are sorry, but we are not equipped to provide sponsorships to our staff members. 

MONTESSORI EXPERIENCE: Some Montessori classroom experience is preferred. 

MONTESSORI TRAINING: Montessori teacher certification, Montessori internship status, or Montessori assistant certification is preferred. 

MONTESSORI ASSISTANT TRAINING: For the as-yet untrained Montessori professional with otherwise strong qualifications, Garden Gate will require completion of a  Montessori assistant training program prior to employment. This is a short term summer program for assistants. 


The primary responsibilities of the Assistant position are classroom overview, student observation and record keeping, classroom preparation, communication with other staff, and short practical life lessons for individual children. 

This individual needs to be able to understand the specific role played by the Assistant and its importance to the effective functioning of the Montessori community. The Assistant needs to be open to learning the many aspects inherent in effective classroom overview and helping students become independent learners. The Assistant also needs embrace learning the details of preparing the beautiful and orderly Montessori “Prepared Environment.” The Assistant must be able to maintain a positive, open relationship with the Director / Guide and our other classroom Assistant.
